Study: Wii playing kids lose weight

Many people didn’t believe the story of Mickey DeLorenzo, but in February there was a research undertaken at a UK university that backs the story up. The Liverpool John Moores University found out that playing active games with the [tag]WiiRemote[/tag] and [tag]Nunchuk[/tag] can make you 27 pounds per year thinner. They kept an eye on the calories burned, the heart rate and energy expenditure of five girls and seven boys from 13-15 years old. Playing 15 minutes with the traditional controller made the energy expenditure increase by 60 percent, with the [tag]WiiRemote[/tag] the result was 156 percent! Their hear beats were also faster when using the [tag]Wii[/tag] reaching per minute up to 130 beats, while in traditional games this is only 85 bpm.

Professor Tim Cable who lead the research said the following:

“Through our testing it is clear that the motion sensor controlled console can make an impact on a child’s heart rate, energy expenditure and the amount of calories burned… Active consoles such as the Wii could provide a means of motivating children who are less active. However, parents should encourage other physical activities and outdoor pursuits in order for their children to lead well balanced lives.”

The Wii is really going to make America look thinner.

Wii Sports - Working out with boxing

May 18th, 2007 by admin

One of the best games to get in shape for the [tag]Wii[/tag] is off course the game every Wii-owner has in his collection: [tag]Wii Sports[/tag]. Wii Tennis must be the favorite segment of this game according to many gamers, but actually Wii Boxing is a lot better to move. In boxing you need to dodge attacks and off course you’ll punch the hell out of your enemy.

Again this is a very simple game to play. The [tag]WiiRemote[/tag] and [tag]Nunchuk[/tag] are actually your boxinggloves. In the simple tutorial you will be told to keep both WiiMote and Nunchuk in front of your face to protect yourself from enemy attacks. For dodging the opponent’s attacks even better, you’ll have to move from left to right, front to back to avoid the [tag]Mii[/tag]’s punches. The only difference with real boxing is that you’re not moving in the ring, your characters are just fixed in the middle of the boxingring. This isn’t a problem though, you’ll be already moving enough.

Tips for playing Wii Boxing

  • Make sure you use the [tag]Wrist Strap[/tag] You don’t want to let the controllers slip out of your hands because in this part of Wii Sports you’ll be moving for sure! Clean up the place before you start gaming, you don’t want to destroy that $500 porcelaine vase! We also advise silicone skins for your gamepads.
  • Make your own Mii’s to fight against. Make for example a Mii with the head of your boss, your mother in law, your brother/sister, a teacher you don’t like. It doesn’t matter; just make sure those punches won’t miss their effect!
  • Grab a towel. Off course you don’t need to have a towel with you to throw it in the ring because the only thing you can’t do in this game is giving up. Just like you shouldn’t give up exercising with the Wii. You do need this towel to whipe your sweat off every now and then.
  • Drink water. That’s right; water, so not those cokes that contain nothing but fat. An energy drink every now and then can’t hurt, but don’t overdo it; it’s going to ruin the work out schedule. Remember to keep eating healthy and don’t run low on sugar.
  • Keep it fun. Make sure you’re not getting too frustrated. At a certain point you’ll have so many points that the opponent will be almost indestructable. Follow the advise the Wii gives you: take a break every now and then, catch some fresh air!

More tips to box better in Wii Sports will be added soon. In the meanwhile, check some videos to see how fun and healthy Wii Boxing is.
