Wii Sports Weight Loss Program

This is a guide that we have build for people to use to lose weight by playing Wii Sports for the Nintendo Wii. We have composed this schedule and tested it multiple times on people with different lifestyles, different weight categories, different ages and different sexes. Numbers based in this guide are an average of the results we got from those people. Some people will be losing weight easier than others, keep this in mind while working out this program. A lot depends from the way you will be playing games. This is a 10 week program; each day you should be playing about 30-45 minutes active Wii Sports. If you have anyway questions about this guide, suggestions or problems, just mail us or leave a comment.
Before you start with the program, make sure you weigh yourself to compare with the end result. Some people do it more fanatically and also measure their Body Mass Index, calories burned per session/game, body fat percentage, heart rate (at rest) and took note of additional notes or soreness. When it’s the first time you’ll start up the game you won’t have any Wii Fitness Age, but when you’ve already played the game and decided to start with the program, note done your Wii Fitness Age as well.

1. Getting started
To get started with this program you’ll need a few things. Here’s a list of what exactly you need to work out:
- A Nintendo Wii console, which comes with a free copy of Wii Sports ($249,99)
- A TV, beamer, monitor with VGA box. A screen that allows you to play Wii-games on (Available in all price categories)
- A room as big as possible
- This (almost) perfect guide to lose weight
Off course there are many other things and extra’s that come in handy for training with the Wii. Friends and family members to play with are a big plus, but not necessary. Just make sure that you are installed and that you feel comfortable when playing. For playing on the Wii it’s not necessary to wear a sportoutfit. Make sure you wear clothes you feel comfortable in, preferably a sportingoutfit. Just don’t wear shoes with high heals and twenty sweaters.
See what time is the best for you to train. Maybe you won’t be in the mood to play when you just came home from work or school. Don’t play when you’re tired in order to get the best results out of this program. Try to put a fixed time on your sessions so that your bodyclock won’t be whole messed up. Just make sure that you’re comfortable and that you’re ready to have some fun. Remember that this program is about having fun and losing weight at the same time.
2. Get familiar with the Nintendo Wii
If you have never set up a videogame system, check the manuals that came with the console or check forums to ask help to other gamers but normaly even a non-gamer should be able to install it. The second part is to get used to using the WiiRemote and Nunchuk. There aren’t any booklets to help you with that since everything figures itself out. Make sure you stand in front of your television and that the sensor bar and everything else is set up right. Once you know how to use the controllers, startup the Wii Sports disc and let the fun begin!
Choose a Mii character to get started with and we strongly recommend you to keep using the same Mii to check your progress. This little puppet will be carrying all your scores, your fitness statistics and so on. Pick whatever sport that interests you the most to kick off with. Every sportsegment of the game starts with a very good tutorial that makes you go through all the steps of that sport. Take your time for it, read the tips and you’ll already be a top Wii sporter before you have even started. We recommend that you first try all the sports out before starting the workout schedule. Pick out a favorite that you will do most of the time in this segment.
3. Let’s lose weight!
Everything will depend on how strict you follow the schedule, how active you play and what sport you prefer to play. If you play slow, watch replies and stuff like that you won’t be losing the amount of calories stated below. You can off course choose for a combination of sports, this is just an example of what the results are when you play it when you follow these instructions.
Under this paragraph you see a table with the five different sports, the time you should play per day for ten weeks long and the numbers of calories you should be burning if you play active. Don’t worry if the results are not as displayed in this table. Remember that some people will lose weight easier than others so keep going because anyone can lose weight with our program. After a few days you will be able to play a lot better and the number of calories you’ll burn will go up.

| Sport | Playtime | Calories burned |
|---|---|---|
| Boxing | 15 minutes | 121 |
Boxing is the most active game on the Wii Sports disc. We strongly advise very heavy people not to go too wild in this one since your heart rate will go up a lot. This could be a problem for people who have been advised not to do big efforts. The fact is that this is the perfect game to lose weight. In a couple of minutes you can burn easily 121 calories in 15 minutes time. So this is a rather fast method and you can even speed it up by using a Mii version of a person that you don’t like as an opponent! Keep moving, move from the front to the back, from left to right. Try punching your enemy from different angles, different types of punches and you’ll be sweating that body fat away. Make sure to keep the wrist strap tight!

| Sport | Playtime | Calories burned |
|---|---|---|
| Tennis | 25 minutes | 110 |
Tennis is the second best game to lose body weight. In this game it’s not necessary to move your body from left to right and back to front and that makes it less tiring. Try to play long games and play close to the net so that you’ll have to hit the ball faster. There are some nice tricks to make this the ultimate Wii Sports weight loss game. When setting up the game, just choose to control one of the two opponents as your player as well. You’ll have three Mii’s this way and you can even make the fourth one your tennisplayer as well. This is only recommended for people that are real tennis masters, but just keep in mind that this is all possible. Also, try to hit smashes since this will speed the game up as well.

| Sport | Playtime | Calories burned |
|---|---|---|
| Bowling | 30 minutes | 104 |
Bowling comes on number three since this game doesn’t require that you move with your whole body. When playing this activly you can however lose weight by just swinging your arms and doing some cool moves while throwing your bowling ball. Don’t just move your polses around but swing the ball away with an arm movement. Go for strikes and spares and swing your ball with power, but don’t waste your time on aiming your ball in the right direction. Try clicking the reviews away fast and compete other people in this game since bowling is a perfect game to play with your family.

| Sport | Playtime | Calories burned |
|---|---|---|
| Baseball | 35 minutes | 102 |
Baseball comes in fourth since this game is also a lot about watching your Mii run around the field and there aren’t many opportunities to use your whole body in this game. In our testing we haven’t had many people who played this game to lose weight and it won’t make you a real Wii Sports addict. You can play it every now and then to get some variation, but it won’t train your muscles or burn much calories.

| Sport | Playtime | Calories burned |
|---|---|---|
| Golf | 45 minutes | 99 |
Golf is a nice and relaxing sport but we recommend you not to put this discipline in your program since you’ll have to spend to much time on losing a small amount of calories. You can fitch it in for some variation, but don’t do the whole weight loss project with only this sport. You have to focus too much on getting your ball to the end of the course and there just isn’t any way to play this game really active. A swing with your golfclub will make you lose some calories, more than that you won’t get out of it. Still a nice sport though, just not something to make you sweat.
- One of the things you absolutely have to avoid is frustration. If you’re getting a little frustrated, switch over to Wii Boxing to lose some steam and if that doesn’t work, put the controllers away and just do something else. Taking a walk to catch some fresh air is the best way to lose the heat or just play another fun Wii-game that doesn’t require much physical input.
- When you start to get bored off Wii Sports during this program, DON’T give up! There are many ways to make Wii Sports more fun and challenging. Try some new Mii’s out, check out some other sports, change some of the game settings to make it more fun and exciting, compete a roommate, family member or friend or try some of the neat Wii Sports accessories to make it more realistic and more fun. Convince non-gamers to give it a shot and have a good laugh at them when they suck at the game!
- Try to teach your pet how to play Wii Sports. We’ve seen in several movies that dogs, cats and other nice animals can even play Wii Sports, the game is that simple to learn! Don’t get pissed when your dog gets better in it than you…
- Play as active as possible. Try to move with your whole body and not just your arms, do the mimics . Wii Sports is a game that’s made for standing in front of your TV so don’t be lazy and sit like a bag of potatoes in your sofa.
- Don’t be too fanatic in this program. Playing longer than suggested in this guide won’t kill you, but remember that Wii Sports uses a lot of muscles in your body. Always put on your wrist strap since we all know what can happen if the WiiRemote slips out of your hands! Stretching before you start training
with Wii Sports is a good way to warm your muscles up.
6. Wii Fitness

The Wii Fitness feature in Wii Sports is a great way to measure your progress in this trainschedule. Every sport itself gets three sort of minigames so in total that makes 15. In tennis for example your opponent will constantly be hitting balls and you’ll have to hit back as many as possible in order to get a younger Fitness Age, in bowling you get more cones to knock on the ground, in boxing you have to punch more etc. More new challenges and some nice statistics to see how you are evolving.
7. After the Wii Sports Weight Loss program
Review your weight loss program, check how many weight you’ve loss, what your heart rate is when resting, check your Wii Fitness Age, check your pro scores and try to compare your results with the reports of other Wii weightloss friends. If it didn’t work out like you had hoped, don’t give up and learn from your mistakes. Perhaps give us some feedback about this guide or ask us to give you some advise for a second attempt. You can send us pictures from before or after and we’ll add them to our website with your story about the Wii Weight Loss project. Share your experiences with other Wii owners so that everyone in the world knows that Wii sports is a fun way to lose a few pounds. Since you should be playing 30-45 minutes per day, these new challenges will be more than welcome!
8. First reviews from our readers
Carl:
Before (01/01/2007)
Weight: 248
Waist: 46″
Body fat: 32%After (05/05/2007)
Weight: 218
Waist: 43″
Body fat: 22%Above are the statistics of my bodyweight, waist dimensions and the percentage of my body fat all before and after. I started soon after my son bought his Nintendo Wii and got hooked on and decided to start the New Year with a Wii Sports training. It didn’t went well in the beginning but after two weeks I started to get the hang of the games and knew how to use my entire body in these games. My favorites were Wii Boxing and Wii Tennis and I kept challenging myself in the Wii Fitness Age program. I really recommend that plan since it gives you nice statiscs of your evolutions. I’m going to keep training with Wii Sports and I advise this program to anyone!
Melany:
Pictures removed due to complaints about the girl being to skinny after the Wii program.Hey guys I just want you to know that I really love the Wii Sports game and its fun factor. I really like jogging and all but I wanted something new and this Wii was something fresh that I wanted to try out. I’m 24 now and wanted to go from 100 lbs to 92 lbs and I did it in only four six weeks! I have been playing a lot in that period and invited some friends over to have a chat and play some on the Wii. I really loved tennis, a sport that I have practised when I was still a kid. My score is 1085 now and I’m still trying to do better. I was able to lose weight with Wii Sports on a fun way and all of my efforts were rewarded. I’m glad this guide got composed and I would suggest that everyone loses weight with this new program.

It’s good to see Wii”Healthy” supporting Melany’s anorexia. She certainly looked better in the “before” and must’ve been healthier pre-Wii. No one who weighs anywhere near 100 lbs. should be attempting or even concerned at all with losing weight. This is not an example of health.
May 23rd, 2007 at 5:32 pm
I agree with Dan fully, I would not know if she has anorexia. But being 100lbs she really should not be concerned with losing anything. She looked healthy/very thin before. In the after she looks sickly. Put a better, more healthy looking example up, instead of her.
May 24th, 2007 at 2:00 am
Agreed. Do not support body image disorders by leaving that example up. There is no reason in the world (barring the girl being less than four feet tall) to justify an eight pound weight loss from a 100 pound body. Touting this example as good is irresponsible.
Rather than encourage such extreme weight loss, suggest such people gain or maintain their weight through development of muscle tone by increasing their calorie and protein intake as they work out.

Melany is looking a little on the chunky side, I think she needs to Wii more often.
May 24th, 2007 at 8:14 am
I really think that Melany’s example should be removed. She’s clearly exercising terrible eating habits and is borderline anorexic. Look at a before and after of nicole richie and I’ll bet you will see many paralells. She looks like a cancer patient.
Shame to see such beautiful women think that they’re overweight because likely some pig boyfriend of hers told her that she had flabby arms or something.

That girl looks good in her before picture. She just looks awful in the after picture. I do suggest taking snack breaks, not just playing Wii constantly. Who tries to lose 8 pounds when they weigh 100 anyway? That is messed!

Melanie used to be a real beaty at 100 lbs. No need to be so harsh in the comments though.

Well, if you asked me, leaving pictures available of someone who is obviously not well is not a reward, but rather a warning to others. I find censorship disgusting, regardless of intention. It assumes people can not think on their own. Don’t give me an arguement about young impressionable girls either…. I’m 33 and most people here are at least that old. I would guess that the people crying out are the same parents who think they have “good communication” with their teens. Yikes.

I find it absolutely disgusting that people were further destroying Melany’s body image. Telling somebody that they are too skinny and need to put on pounds is just as damaging as making fun of somebody for being fat. Sorry buddy, but telling the truth shouldn’t damage someone’s body image more. I agree some people here aren’t necessarily nice about it, but it is not a bad thing to tell someone they are too skinny. Telling her she might have a problem might save her life.

I absolutely agree with Jay. There issue at stake is not the actual weight but the use of peer pressure to achieve what is considered beautiful or healthy. If you are disgusted at the Olsen twin, nicole ritchie, and other starlets at misrepresenting what an ideal weight should be, and then the media’s use of peer pressure to reinforce that, you shouldn’t use the SAME tactics to tell someone they are too skinny.
I didn’t see the pictures, they may be unhealthy, but making anorexic jokes and calling a woman who is trying to be healthy disgusting is the same thing from the opposite side, that (plus the removal of pictures do to the peer pressure) simply reaffirm to her that she can do NOTHING to look pretty to anyone.
I read through the comments, there were absolutely NO positive criticisms in there, and I can’t say that any of the people on this board “looking out for a positive image” presented one in their statements.
I agree with the call of hypocrisy

I’m not really into video type games. Does Wii make a game geared more towards fitness and exercising, such as games like Dance Revolution?
When I was rehabbing my shoulder, the rehab had a belt that was placed on my waste, and I would try to hit balls being thrown at me, jumping up and down, and things like that .
I’m looking more for low impact exercising, rather than hitting balls or opponents. Do you know if anything is out there like this? Thanks, MIKE
December 29th, 2007 at 12:21 am
I personally have not seen the Melony picture, but I just want to say that I am 4’11″ and anywhere from 90 to 115 lbs is considered a healthy weight for my height. It seems to me that “fat” has become the norm, so that when they see someone who isn’t fat, then they look anorexic. I used to be 95 lbs, but after I quite smoking a year and a half ago I gained 20 lbs. I was then diagnosed with hypothyroidism last August which is most likely the reason I gained so much weight. I am going to start the Wii program myself at the beginnig of the year and hope to lose the 20 lbs I gained, and hopefully gain some muscle in the process.

Hello, This is Mary
I am 36 years old with 2 toddlers. My youngest just started day care last week- which still feels a little strange. I haven’t had this much time to myself in years. First thing I want to do is lose the extra pounds I put on during the last pregnancy. One of the girls next door has suggested I join her walking group two days a week. After my first pregnancy I lost around 35 pounds using the Herbalife products, but when I called the man that sold them to me three years ago he told me this week he doesn’t sell them anymore. He told me to look on the internet. It’s disappointing because he was really nice and he called me regularly to make sure I was using their products correctly. It was nice to have someone checking in with me every week to see how I was and it kept me motivated.
I searched on the internet for someone that sells Herbalife in New Jersey. I found many websites but I don’t want
just to buy the products, I want to find someone trustworthy that sells the products so I can also meet them and get started again.
Could anybody here recommend someone in New Brunswick?.
Thanks, Mary

I am just starting the Wii Fitness Program (I just got my wii for xmas) and had a suggestion that could possibly be helpful as well as a question?? The two games I play the most are the boxing and the bowing. A suggestion would be to alternate what side u are using as your controller hands. This ensures that u work out both sides of ur body the same. My question refers to the suggested workout times for each game type. It says to play wii for 30-45 mins a day but the boxing says 15 mins?? Should i still be doing it for 30-45 mins??

This is just funny. The Wii will not get you in shape. Exercise and a healthy lifestyle will. Fat Americans are a plague and detriment to our great society for so many reasons. If you’re fat, have fun with the wii but get your butt out of the house and hit the gym or go running.
Now on the other hand, if playing the wii after you come in from real exercise is your game plan then go for it. I do like the competition it presents and it is a good stress reliever. My arms were a little sore after the boxing but that’s about all I saw out of it.

This is wonderful news for me, a stay at home mom with three busy kids. I dont feel comfortable going to the gym nor do I have the time. With the Wii I will be exercising and enjoying myself at the same time, which is not anything Im certainly used to! I’m going to document my results now, too… and will keep you all posted!

Truthfully, the family loves it, and if you play Wii Sports like you mean it, you will lose weight!

Hi I just got the Wii Fitness program on Friday and wow! A lot of you are confusing Wii Sports with Wii Fitness, it is completely different. The fitness system measures balance to a tee. It is outstanding. My abs and back are killing me. I am using it to just tone up, I am already 5’6″ and 118 pounds, a healthy weight for me. Really, I am amazed. Being able to visualize your balance on the screen helps you keep proper posture during yoga poses and aerobics. And you can jog through an entire island! Phenomenal, you simply must try to understand the true benefits and genius behind this creation. I am so impressed.

Ok, well first of al, I agree with the hypocrisy thing. Don’t disregard people just because they look anorexic. I had a friend who was anorexic and I know the pain she’s been through has been a heavy burden for her. All of you should be disgusted with yourselves, calling her a ‘skeleton’ and whatnot. Imagine being called that yourselves continually. Would you like it? Anyways, Melany, do what you want to do and don’t let what these fools say bother you.

I really don’t think that the Wii Fit is like DDR, with the exception of the step aerobics, in which you have to step at tempo. The rest of the Wii Fit is more like a workout video, but one in which you decide what in particular area you want to work. I have lost a little weight, plus it was a great way to ease myself into being active after surgery.

“We’ve seen some research that says 60 per cent of people who bought a Wii Fit play it once and don’t play it again. So we have to get the balance right, because what we are doing is bringing new consumers into the market for the first time in their lives sometimes – and we have to treat them with respect.”

I started seriously using wii fit on 1/15/2009. I weighed 187.5 lbs and am 5’10-1/2″ (considered overweight) I started by working out 3 times per week. Today (6/11/2009) I am proud to say I weigh 149.5 lbs and have lost nearly 40 lbs and have a bmi of 21.25. Now I’m considered in the normal weight range. Wii fit was a big help in this weight loss by making it easy and fun to track my weight and bmi, along with having a virtual personal trainer to coach me along. I can’t give all the credit to nintendo, I also maintained a very low fat diet (without skipping any meals) and went running 3 times per week in addition to my 20-30 minutes of wii training 3 times per week. I am 28 years old and probably had an easier time than someone older or starting off heavier would, but I’m here to say with dedication one can lose weight with help from wii!
October 24th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
I just started using the Wii Fit Plus yesterday. I have been reading up on it, people saying it is a scam and it won’t help you lose weight. Well I know that this morning after working out for 1.5 hours I definitely felt it. I am planning on using this an hour a day, and hope that it will help me lose weight. I know for me a treadmill or stepper is boring! and the Wii fit provides a little incentive. I will keep you guys posted on my success.

[...] Nintendo Wii Sports – When Nintendo launched its Wii gaming console, they revolutionized the home game console by pulling the players off the couch and onto the floor. I love it because it gets the entire family involved and fit. The motion sensing Wii Remote made it possible for players to play a simulation instead of playing with a joystick, so it was a natural that a game that let you simulate favorite sports would be a good fit. It was well received, and soon many homes bought their first console just to play Wii Sports (it comes with the console; you can get Wii Fit and Wii Sports Resort, too). Virtual Tennis, anyone? [...]

Rosa, that is great! I just found this website today and I want to start the 10 week challenge tomorrow! It seems to be a fun and effective way to get the weight off! May I ask how long it took you? I am wondering because my hubby and I are wanting to get pregnant and my doctor told me to lose 30 pounds before trying. She wants me to be as healthy as possible. Anyways, I am just curious about how long it took other people to lose weight on it.

Interesting study! I stumbled upon this page about 4 years ago, however, I don’t feel like there are better alternatives in the game itself(mini games in the training mode)–then the main games that you did your study on, yourself.
From personal experience of playing this game on and off for 4 years now, I’ve found that these 2 mini games in the training mode:
-Batting Practice (hitting 30 baseballs)
-Hitting the Bag (hitting punching bags nonstop for 60 seconds)
are by far the best calorie burners in the entire game, as they barely have any interruptions ,and require more constant interaction.!
Play both of those mini games in training mode, each for 15 minutes, and you’ll feel the burn and start sweating in a few minutes!
September 28th, 2011 at 3:54 am
I love to play it and, after the 30 day challenge started to see a visible improvement. The only drawback is that some of the jumping exercises are hard on the knees. The training varies each day, so I never get bored.

One thing is that if you find yourself searching for a student loan you may find that you’ll want a co-signer. There are many cases where this is correct because you might discover that you do not employ a past credit standing so the mortgage lender will require that you have someone cosign the loan for you. Thanks for your post.
