Wii Sports vs. Real Sports: Burned calories calculated
Ever wondered how many calories you’re burning while playing some Wii Sports on your Nintendo Wii? The American Council on Exercise is a little late with their ‘Wii Sports fitness study’, but they did some great research. Here’s an overview of the calories burned per minute when playing the real sport compared to the numer of calories burned when playing Wii Sports:
Tennis:
The real sport: 8.1 calories per minute
Wii Sports: 5.3 calories per minute
Boxing:
The real sport: 10.2 calories per minute
Wii Sports: 7.2 calories per minute
Golf:
The real sport: 3.9 calories per minute
Wii Sports: 3.1 calories per minute
Bowling:
The real sport: 7.2 calories per minute
Wii Sports: 3.5 calories per minute
Baseball:
The real sport: 7.3 calories per minute
Wii Sports: 4.5 calories per minute
Off course everyone expected that real sports make you burn more calories than the Wii Sports games, but during their research they certainly didn’t play too active. The just flicked their wrists and didn’t throw their whole body into the game.

Great info

This doesn’t work, kcal burned depends on a person’s weight and sex. Generally this information applies to average sized males. For this information to be useful, it would have to be given as a calculator.

So working out with Wii really does help burn the calories to lose weight and improve sport fitness. But looks like the ‘real sport’ still burns most calories.

“[...]but during their research they certainly didn’t play too active. The just flicked their wrists and didn’t throw their whole body into the game.”
Wrong. The linked pdf says the opposite.

@wii fan: We here at WiiHealthy have our own definition of ‘playing active’
I’m sure they just flicked their wrists and didn’t do much of anything else…

when I play baseball on the wii, I get my entire body into the swing. I go to hitting practice in training mode, 30 hits. repeat…work on 10 home runs. repeat…
When I play baseball for real (and that was when I was a kid and there actually was a team to play with), I just strike out and wait for the inning to be over.
So which exercise burns the most calories? Sitting in the dugout most of the time or hitting over and over again?

I’m surprised that wii games have you burning half the calories or more of the real sport.

It’s fascinating that you can burn so many calories i.e at a comparable level with playing out int he field, without throwing your whole body into the game. I like the fact that you have fitness alternatives now that you can pursue within the confines of your home to achieve real results.

I can’t help but get into the games…they are so fun! Got the Wii at Christms and have dropped my BMI by 2 points, lost 18lb and 2 pant sizes….and that is playing sporadically. If it did nothing else, it got me off the couch and playing with my kids!

I am getting the wii fit plus in a week, but I love playing my wii sports too, my favorite is tennis, my husband cracks up at me because I get into so much.
I played for 1 solid hour tonight, first I did my wii age, then played 2 games of baseball, 1 game of tennis best out of 5, then I boxed 3 games. Now my arms feel like I just worked out in the gym hitting a punching bag. Whoever said it dont work, well you arent playing it properly. It is all you put into it.

I have to say. anybody that thinks that this is not as good as a real work out is wrong. put as much effort into the game as you do in the gym and you will see what I mean. Also it is great stimulation for the brain.

Wow the wii is the greatest invention ever. You get to play video games AND be burning half the calories of the real thing.
It’s amazing to have the wii considering today we have so much junk food and overweight kids these days.
